Betting 101: The Playbook for Beginners

New To Sports Betting

You’re in the right place. This guide breaks down the basics — from understanding odds and spreads to learning what parlays, moneylines, and over/unders really mean. At Profit Playbook Picks, we believe every bettor should feel confident before placing a wager. Use this page to learn the key terms, betting strategies, and smart habits that turn beginners into informed players.

1.UNDERSTANDING THE ODDS

Odds represent how much you can win on a bet and the likelihood of it happening.

  • American Odds (+/-):

    • +200 means you win $200 on a $100 bet.
    • -150 means you need to bet $150 to win $100.
  • Positive = Underdog
  • Negative = Favorite

Knowing how to read odds helps you compare value and risk on every line.

2. THE MONEYLINE

The simplest type of bet you’re picking who wins the game.

  • Example: If the Chiefs -150 beat the Ravens +130, a $150 bet on the Chiefs wins $100, or a $100 bet on the Ravens wins $130.
No spreads, no totals  just who wins.

3. THE POINT SPREAD

The spread levels the playing field between teams.

  • Example: 49ers -6.5 vs. Rams +6.5

    • The 49ers must win by 7+ points to “cover.”
    • The Rams can win or lose by 6 and still cover.

Spread bets reward accuracy, not just picking winners.

4. TOTALS (OVER/UNDER)

Instead of betting on a winner, you bet on total points scored by both teams.

  • Example: O/U 45.5 bet the Over if you think the game will be high scoring, Under if you expect a defensive battle.

5. PARLAYS

A parlay combines multiple bets into one ticket for a higher payout but all legs must hit to win.

  • Example: 3 bets × $10 = big potential profit, but if one loses, the whole ticket is done.
Parlays are fun, but risky use them strategically.

6. PROP BETS (PLAYER & GAME PROPS)

Props focus on specific outcomes not just the final score.

  • Examples: “Patrick Mahomes over 2.5 passing TDs” or “First team to score: Chiefs.”
Props make watching the game more interactive and are great for finding value in matchups.

7. FUTURES

These are long-term bets, like picking who wins the Super Bowl or MVP before the season ends.

  • Example: “49ers to win Super Bowl +600.”
Futures offer big payouts but tie up your money for weeks or months.

8. BETTING TERMS TO KNOW

A few quick ones every bettor should understand:

  • Cover: When a team beats the spread.
  • Push: When the final result lands exactly on the spread or total (bet refunded).
  • Juice/Vig: The sportsbook’s fee built into the odds.
  • Unit: A standard bet size (e.g., 1 unit = $100).
  • Sharp: An experienced, successful bettor.
